State to enforce new rules on radiation limits in CT scans

Improving patient safety is goal; UW Medicine practitioners advised Washington health regulators

Washington is the latest state to respond to public concerns about overexposure to radiation during medical procedures. Starting in January, state Department of Health will enforce new regulations related to CT (computed tomography) scans.

The rules will set dose limits for radiation and establish training education requirements for the medical staff performing the procedure.

"These regulations are really going to make the environment safer for the patient," said Dr. William Shuman, chairman of UW Medicine Department of Radiology.
